Specialist Dental Care

Implants are not better than teeth but they are the next best thing! With our specialists, we can really decide whether we can save a tooth or what the best alternative would be.

Our specialist care is based on dental specialties that are officially recognised by the General Dental Council UK. All accredited dental specialists are listed on the General Dental Council website www.gdc-uk.org. This list helps patients make an informed decision when they are looking for appropriately trained dentists to manage their dental care.

At The Specialist Dental Practice, we provide a superlative service with specialists available in one state-of-the-art multidisciplinary clinic. Mastering in advanced restorative and implant dentistry that encompasses specialist dental disciplines of prosthodontics, endodontics, periodontics and oral surgery,  we strive to achieve the optimum level of health, aesthetics, and function for your mouth that is bespoke to individual patient needs and expectations.

Prosthodontics

Prosthodontics as a discipline pertains to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues.

Patients contemplating dental treatment which may require the use of dental implants, the extensive use of veneers as part of a smile ‘makeover’, and treatment that involves major changes of the dentition are strongly encouraged to seek the advice of a prosthodontist in order to obtain the most appropriate, comprehensive and individually tailored solution to their dental needs.

The aim is to get your mouth fully restored to optimal function and appearance and in so doing, help you to maintain your teeth and any prosthesis for as long as possible and minimise the need for future dental treatment.

Treatments that fall under the expertise of a prosthodontist and which we are able to offer include:

  • Preventative dentistry
  • Aesthetic (cosmetic) dentistry, such as teeth whitening, bonding and
  • Porcelain veneers
  • Crown and bridgework
  • Implant dentistry
  • Partial and complete dentures
  • TMJ (jaw joint) problems
  • Restoration of damaged/mutilated dentitions e.g. tooth wear; including partial and full mouth reconstruction
  • Complex cases involving multi-disciplinary specialist care
    mandibular advancement splints-
  • Snoring and sleep apnoea Solutions

Endodontics

Endodontics is the dental specialty concerned with the study and treatment of the dental pulp. Our endodontist perform a variety of procedures including:

  • Endodontic therapy (commonly known as “root canal therapy”)
endodontic retreatment (revision of failing root canal therapy)
  • Endodontic and regenerative surgery
  • Treating cracked teeth
  • Dental trauma
Root canal therapy is one of the most common procedures of the above. If the dental pulp (containing nerves, arterioles, venules, lymphatic tissue, and fibrous tissue) becomes diseased or injured, endodontic treatment is required to save the tooth.

Although General Dentists can perform endodontic treatment, patients are often referred to us when the case is complicated or more difficult than usual. Endodontic treatment is an economical way to preserve a tooth in function especially when both the biological and financial cost of tooth loss and replacement is so high.

Periodontics

Periodontics or Periodontology is the specialty of dentistry that studies supporting structures of teeth and dental implants, as well as diseases and conditions that affect them. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament.

Often referred to as “gum” disease, periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease of the gums that results in the gradual and progressive destruction of the bone and ligament that hold the tooth in the jaw. It is caused by bacteria in plaque both above and below the gum line. If left untreated it can lead to the teeth becoming loose and having to be removed, or even falling out.

Periodontal diseases are usually slow in progressing and it can take a number of years for enough bone loss to occur for the teeth to become loose. However, the severity of the disease can vary from one person to another.

Our periodontist treat the different diseases that affect the gum and bone surrounding your teeth and dental implants. Gum disease is now the leading cause of tooth loss in the adult population and as such we place a strong emphasis on its detection and treatment. In addition, we can also offer a number of cosmetic gum treatment options including:

  • Recession coverage to cover exposed tooth root surfaces
  • Crown lengthening to increase the length of teeth and reduce a “gummy” smile
  • Gum recontouring to correct irregularities and give a balanced, symmetrical smile.
regeneration of dental tissues lost to
  • Periodontal disease

Oral Surgery

Some patients may be referred to our Minor Oral Surgery Service if they need dental care which cannot be provided by their regular dentist. If your Dentist believes this is the best option for you, they will refer you to our services. Following this we will offer you an assessment appointment.
The term “Minor oral surgery” refers to smaller operations and includes removing wisdom teeth, impacted teeth, and severely broken-down teeth, as well as apicectomies and bone augmentation for dental implant therapy.
